Both are pale goatfish with one bold black spot. Dash-and-dot Goatfish has a dark stripe -- the dash -- from the upper lip through the eye along the body, and its spot -- the dot -- is at the base of the tail; it is the largest goatfish, to 60 cm. Sidespot Goatfish has no stripe: its black spot sits mid-body on the lateral line, with a pale pink to white spot right behind it, and small blue spots dot the scales above.
