Both change completely as they grow, and they look alike at both ages. Young Axilspot Hogfish are black with large white spots; young Coral Hogfish are black with yellow spots. Adult Coral Hogfish have a sharp black band dividing the dark front of the body from the pale rear; adult Axilspot Hogfish lack that band and have large black spots on the soft dorsal and anal fins.
